Verses each have an “address." This address has three parts: the book, the chapter, and the verse number(s).
Here is an example:
Sometimes, only a book and chapter will be listed, like this: John 3. That means you should read the whole chapter. (It's all good!) Sometimes, you'll see more than one verse listed, like this: John 3:16-18. That means you should start reading at the first verse listed, and read all the way through the last verse listed.
1. Look for the book of John. (It begins on page 809.)
2. Find the BIG numbers on the page. These are the chapter numbers. Turn the page until you see the big number 3. Chapter 3 starts there (page 811).
3. Find the smaller numbers on the page. Look closely! Some of them are in the middle of a paragraph. These are the verse numbers. In Chapter 3, look for the small number 16. It is on page 811. Verse 16 is all the words that come after the number 16, up until the number 17.
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16
