Has anyone ever made fun of you because of something you do or believe in? Do you sometimes do what other kids tell you to do because you want to fit in? This is a story about a man who did not give in to the people around him. He kept on doing what he believed was right, and God protected him for it.
A long, long time ago, there was a man named Daniel. He lived in a city called Babylon, and he was in a position of high authority there. King Darius was the king of Babylon, but Daniel was also a ruler there, and King Darius was one of Daniel's best friends. Some other rulers in Babylon got jealous of Daniel because he was such good friends with the king. They started watching Daniel to see if he did anything wrong, so that they could tell the king and the king would punish Daniel. But they could never catch Daniel doing anything wrong. The only thing they saw him do was to pray every day by his window. Well, these men were evil. They wanted Daniel to get into trouble, so they came up with a wicked plan. They went to King Darius and told him that they thought he should make a law. This law would say that no one would be allowed to pray to anyone except the king for 30 days. Anyone who broke this law would be thrown into the lions' den with all of the lions. King Darius didn't know that the men were trying to get Daniel in trouble, so he passed the law. You see, Daniel was faced with a hard choice. If he kept praying, he knew he might die. But he also knew that praying to God is very important, and God commands us to pray. So he did what he knew was right, and he followed God. God protected him for doing what was right.
Daniel heard about the law, but he did not stop praying to God. He knew that if he got caught, he would be thrown into the lions' den. But Daniel loved God with all of his heart, and he knew that he had to keep praying to Him, no matter what. The men saw Daniel praying to God, and so they took him to King Darius. They told the king that they had found Daniel praying to God, so he had to be thrown into the lions' den like the law said. King Darius didn't want to do it, but he had to keep the law he had passed. Daniel was thrown into the pit of lions.
Daniel spent the night praying to God. God watched over Daniel and shut the mouths of the lions so they would not eat Daniel. The next morning, King Darius came to the entrance of the lions' den. When he called to Daniel, Daniel answered him! He was still alive! King Darius opened the doors and let Daniel out. Then he praised God for protecting Daniel, and he threw the evil men into the lions' den instead.
