In The Beginning

Long, long ago people looked up at the moon and stars at night, just as you do, and they asked, "Who made them and set them in the sky?" And they looked at the green hills and the birds and flowers and they asked, "How did this, our beautiful world, begin? Who created it?" Do you ever wonder that? Well, the story about the beginning of the universe is written down in the Bible, for all of us to read! Here's what it says.

In the beginning, God made the heavens and the earth. The earth was empty, and it had no shape, and everything was very dark.

God said, "Let there be light!" And there was light.

God saw the light, and it was good. Then He divided the light from the darkness. God called the light "Day," and He called the darkness "Night." And that became the first day of all time.

On the second day, God said, "Let there be a sky to separate the waters above from the waters below." And God called the sky "Heaven."

On the third day, God gathered the waters together, and He called the waters "Seas." He caused dry ground to appear, and He called the dry ground "Land." God looked these things, and they were good.

Then He said, "Let the earth be covered with grass and green plants and beautiful fruit trees." And it was so. The grass grew, and the trees had fruit, and there were green plants aall over the ground. And God saw that it was good.

On the fourth day, God said, "Let there be lights in the heavens. Let them divide the days from the nights. Let them mark the years and the seasons." And it happened!

God made two great lights: the greater light was the sun, and it would shine during the day. The lesser light was the moon, and it would shine at night. And He also made the stars.

And God looked at all that He had made, and it was good.
